Electric Vehicle Road User Charges (EV RUC)
If your vehicle is powered fully or partly by externally supplied electricity and weighs between 1001kg and 3500kg GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass), it is required to pay Road User Charges (RUC).
Here's a breakdown of the RUC rates based on different types of electric vehicles:
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs)
- Description: Powered exclusively by electricity and requires plugging in to charge.
- RUC Rate: $76.00 per 1000km.
Plug-in Petrol Hybrid Vehicles
- Description: Utilizes both petrol and electricity and can be plugged in to charge.
- RUC Rate: $38.00 per 1000km (due to the existing payment of fuel excise duty on petrol).
Plug-in Diesel Hybrid Vehicles
- Description: Uses both diesel and electricity and can be plugged in to charge.
- RUC Rate: $76.00 per 1000km.
Hybrid Diesel Vehicles (Non-Plug-in)
- Description: Uses both diesel and electricity but cannot be plugged in to charge.
- RUC Rate: $76.00 per 1000km (RUC is already applicable).
Hybrid Petrol Vehicles (Non-Plug-in)
- Description: Uses both petrol and electricity but cannot be plugged in to charge.
- RUC Requirement: No RUC required as fuel excise duty is paid when purchasing petrol.
Very Light Electric Vehicles
- Description: Solely powered by electricity and weigh less than 1000kg (e.g., electric motorcycles or mopeds).
- RUC Requirement: No RUC required.
